中高生のバーチャルレース開催　ロンドン五輪代表の横田さん企画―陸上

　全国中学校体育大会や全国高校総体（インターハイ）のコロナ禍による中止を受け、中高生を対象とした陸上のバーチャルレースが今夏に開催される。大会の名称は「バーチャル・ディスタンス・チャレンジ（略称バーチャレ）」。男子８００メートル前日本記録保持者で２０１２年ロンドン五輪の代表、横田真人さんが代表発起人を務める。
　種目は１００メートル、８００メートル、１５００メートル、１６００メートルリレー、走り高跳びなどを予定。７月２０日から８月２３日までに測定したレースのタイムと動画を、参加者から専用サイトで受け付ける。これを全国や都道府県別にランキング化し、動画を「ユーチューブ」で閲覧できるようにする。正確な距離だと証明できれば、競技場に限らず学校の校庭などで実施してもタイムは有効だ。

　目標の舞台が失われた中高生が誰でも参加できるようにと、バーチャル形式の大会が企画された。「記録を記憶に残す夏」がスローガン。「全国ナンバーワンを目指す、大会を目指す過程を楽しむ、夏の思い出づくり、何でも構わない。それぞれが取り組んできた『陸上競技』をここに詰めて、記憶に残してほしい」。横田さんはそう願いを込める。
　運営には現役トップ選手も携わる。ハーフマラソンの女子で日本記録を持つ新谷仁美（積水化学）は「リアルな大会とはひと味違った楽しさを味わうことができると思う。仲間、先生、保護者と興奮や緊張感を共有してもらえれば」と呼び掛けている。（2020/07/16-05:29）

A virtual track and field competition will be held this summer for junior high school and high school students after major national tournaments in Japan were canceled this year due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
   The Virtual Distance Challenge competition will include events such as the 100 meters, 800 meters and 1,500 meters, the 1,600-meter relay and the high jump.
   Participants will submit videos and records of them taken between Monday and Aug. 23. The records will be ranked nationally and by prefecture, and the videos will be made available for viewing on YouTube.
   The online competition is for students who lost their opportunities to participate in national tournaments, according to its organizer, Masato Yokota, a former Japan record holder in the men's 800 meters.
   "Whether it's seeking to be the best in Japan, enjoying the process of working toward the tournament or making summer memories, anything is fine," said Yokota, a member of the national delegation to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
