Japan Core Machinery Orders Fall 3.2 Pct in May

Japan's seasonally adjusted core machinery orders in May fell 3.2 pct from the previous month, the Cabinet Office said Thursday.
The result, which followed a 2.9 pct decline in April, was weaker than the median estimate of a 0.9 pct rise in a Jiji Press poll of 17 economic research institutes.
Private-sector orders excluding those for ships and power equipment, closely watched as a leading indicator of corporate capital spending, totaled 857.8 billion yen.
The Cabinet Office said that machinery orders are at a standstill, revising down its assessment from last month, when it mentioned signs of a pickup.
Of the core orders, those from nonmanufacturers slid 7.5 pct to 439.7 billion yen.
