50 Years On: Mutual Public Sentiment Negative in Japan, China

Sentiment in Japan and China about the other nation is at a low point as the two countries mark 50 years since the normalization of diplomatic ties.
Goodwill between the East Asian neighbors has decreased significantly since 1972, when then Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka and then Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai signed the Japan-China joint communique for the diplomatic normalization and two giant pandas were gifted to Ueno Zoo in Tokyo.
According to public opinion polls taken in the two countries by Japan's Genron NPO and others, the proportion of Japanese respondents with unfavorable impressions of China has hovered around 90 pct since 2012.
In the latest survey, released last week, about 30 pct of Japanese respondents said that they knew 2022 is the 50th anniversary of the normalized ties with China, and only 6.1 pct said they were satisfied with the current Japan-China relations.
Sentiment about Japan in China worsened rapidly after Japan's move in 2012 to nationalize the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, also claimed by Beijing.
