Two major Japanese steelmakers enjoyed sharp year-on-year growth in their group net profits in April-June, according to their earnings reports released by Thursday.
Nippon Steel Corp. and JFE Holdings Inc. improved profitability on steel price hikes against a backdrop of rising markets for iron ore, coking coal and other commodities. Appraisal gains on raw materials they hold as inventories also increased.
