(2019/11/19-14:55)

Japan, China Agree on Tighter Quarantine Control to Block Swine Fever

The Japanese agriculture ministry has agreed with the Chinese customs authority to strengthen quarantine inspections at airports and ports, a move designed to prevent African swine fever from entering Japan, the ministry said Tuesday.
According to a memorandum of agreement signed on Monday, Japanese and Chinese quarantine and customs officials will enhance inspections of farm and livestock products brought by travelers. Postal items will also be subject to the stringent checks.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the General Administration of Customs also agreed on technical cooperation in using sniffing dogs and X-ray equipment for quarantine checks, as well as on information sharing and joint campaigns to inform travelers about tighter inspections.
African swine fever has been rampant in China and South Korea since last summer. Many pork products illegally brought to Japanese airports by travelers from China have been found to contain viruses of the disease.
