赤鉄橋崩落、不通続く　地域の足、別所線―「象徴」復旧願う声・長野県上田市

　台風１９号による豪雨で、長野県上田市の上田駅と別所温泉駅を結ぶ上田電鉄別所線（１１．６キロ）では、千曲川に架かる赤色の鉄橋が崩落した。観光客や沿線住民の足として地域に支えられてきた路線。一部は運転を再開したが、橋の復旧のめどは立っていない。
　鉄橋は別所線が北陸新幹線などと接続する上田駅を出てすぐにある。１９２４（大正１３）年に架けられた橋は、別所線の象徴として市民や鉄道ファンに親しまれてきた。

　１０月１３日午前、増水により堤防と共に橋台が崩れ、２２４メートルの橋のうち４４メートルが崩落した。上田電鉄は１５日から一部区間の運転を再開し、不通区間は代行バスを走らせているが、本数は減り時間もかかる。今月１６日には運行区間を延長する方針だが、橋が崩落した城下―上田間（０．８キロ）は再開の見通しが立たない。
　沿線の上田女子短大（同市）１年の村上聖奈さん（１８）は「鉄橋の近くに住み、通学で使っていた。崩落を知って信じられない気持ちで、ショックだった」と振り返る。車で通学しているが渋滞もあり、「電車は時間が正確で早い。復旧してほしい」と期待する。

　別所線の終着駅にある別所温泉では被災直後、予約のキャンセルが相次いだが、１カ月を経て例年並みに戻った。旅館は平常通り営業しており、倉沢晴之介旅館組合長（３９）は「安全だよと伝え、来てもらいたい」と訴える。
　上田電鉄はかつて利用客減で廃線の危機に陥り、住民や自治体の支援で立て直してきた。上田女子短大生による観光ガイドなど利用客確保にも取り組み、一時１１７万人まで落ち込んだ輸送人員は、２０１６年度には１３１万人に回復した。それだけに鉄橋崩落の影響は大きく、同社は復旧費の支援を国などに要請している。
　被災後、インターネット交流サイト（ＳＮＳ）には「がんばれ別所線」などと応援の声が寄せられ、地元の子どもからは「また乗りたい」「がんばって」との寄せ書きも届いた。寄付の申し出も相次ぎ、ホームページで銀行口座を紹介している。
　同社の矢沢勉運輸課長（５４）は「県外の市出身者から『思い出の赤い橋を直してほしい』という声も届き、改めて市民の象徴だと感じた」と話し、「鉄道は地域の人にはなくてはならず、できるだけ早く復旧したい」と前を向いた。（2019/11/13-07:08）

An iconic red railway bridge in central Japan remains unrepaired about a month after powerful Typhoon Hagibis caused it to partially collapse, continuing to inconvenience locals and others, while calls for its early restoration are growing, and moves to support recovery efforts are seen.
   Built in 1924 over the Chikuma River, the bridge on Uedadentetsu Co.'s Bessho Line in the city of Ueda, Nagano Prefecture, is much loved by local residents and railway enthusiasts. It is part of the section between Ueda Station, which is one of the two terminals of the 11.6-kilometer line and connects to the Hokuriku Shinkansen Line, and Shiroshita Station.
   On the morning of Oct. 13, the river swelled due to torrential rain from the 19th typhoon of the year, leading an abutment at one end of the 224-meter bridge to collapse along with the part of the levee around the structure, and subsequently, a 44-meter portion of the bridge fell.
   Two days later, the railway operator restarted services between Bessho Onsen Station, the other terminal, and Shimonogo Station, while offering bus services for travel between Shimonogo and Ueda stations. On Saturday, Uedadentetsu is slated to put the Shimonogo-Shiroshita section back online, but it has no idea when the Ueda-Shiroshita section, which covers 800 meters, will be reopened.
   "My house is near the bridge, and I've used the railway when going to and from school. So when I heard that the bridge collapsed, I couldn't believe it. I was shocked," said 18-year-old Seina Murakami, a first-grader at Ueda Women's Junior College, located near a Bessho Line station. Murakami now commutes between her home and the college by car, but sometimes gets stuck in traffic jams. "Trains arrive on time and allow quick travel. I really want the bridge to be restored," she said.
