(2019/11/06-11:16)

Abe-Moon Talks "Encouraging Sign": U.S. Official

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State David Stilwell welcomed Wednesday the brief meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Monday as "an encouraging sign."
"We are very encouraged...to note that President Moon and Prime Minister Abe had the opportunity to talk," Stilwell said. "And that's an encouraging sign."
Stilwell, in charge of East Asian and Pacific affairs, made the comment to the press after meeting with South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha in Seoul.
Stilwell and Kang are believed to have discussed the issue of North Korean nuclear weapons, as well as Seoul's decision to scrap a military information-sharing pact with Japan. The General Security of Military Information Agreement, or GSOMIA, is slated to expire at midnight on Nov. 22, and Stilwell is thought to have called on Kang to renew the agreement.
However, the U.S. assistant secretary did not respond to a press question on whether the two discussed the pact.
