上野動物園、モノレール休止＝５７年開業、乗客６５００万人超

　東京・上野動物園のモノレールが３１日で運行休止となり、夕方に最終列車のイベントが行われた。都交通局が１９５７年、交通機関では日本初のモノレールとして開業し、６５００万人以上の乗客を運んできたが、車両や設備が老朽化。更新して存続するか廃止かは今後検討するという。
　モノレールは東園駅から西園駅まで約３３０メートルで、国内で最も短い。乗車時間は約１分半。車両がレール上にまたがる跨座式ではなく、レール下にある懸垂式で、ゴムタイヤの台車からアームでつながった形をしている。現行の４代目「４０形」車両（２両編成、定員６２人）は２００１年に運行を始めた。
　最終列車は抽選で選ばれた乗客を乗せ、西園駅から出発。その前に永田一秀駅長（６４）が「お子さまの楽しかった（という）声がとても心に残っている」とあいさつした。永田駅長は取材に「車内から見える不忍池などの景色が良く、車両もカラフルで人気があった。非常に残念だ」と話した。

　愛媛県から親子で来た会社員の父（３８）は「皆さんに愛されてきたと思う。ぜひ復活してほしい」と語った。
　都交通局によると、開業当時は路面電車の最盛期だったが、自動車の増加で廃止が予想されたため、地下鉄と並んでモノレールの導入を検討。高低差があり、カーブがきつい実験的な路線を集客が見込める上野動物園に２億円強かけて建設した。初代車両は将来の運用を想定したサイズの半分だが、未来を感じさせる流線形で人気を集めた。８０年代初めに施設の老朽化で廃止が検討された際は存続を求める声が強く、大幅に改修した。
　１１月１日からはバスを運行する。現行車両は東園駅で２４日まで展示する。（2019/10/31-19:00）

The much-loved monorail at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo halted its service on Thursday, after more than 60 years in operation, due to the aging of the train and facilities.
   The monorail was launched in 1957 by the Tokyo metropolitan government's transportation bureau as Japan's first passenger monorail system. Since then, it has carried over 65 million passengers between the zoo's East Garden and West Garden.
   The metropolitan government will consider whether to restore the monorail by overhauling the system or permanently scrap it.
   The 330-meter suspended-type railway has only two stations--East Garden and West Garden, with one-way travel taking about 90 seconds. The two-car monorail can hold up to 62 passengers. Since 2001, the fourth-generation type 40 train has been used on the single rail.
   On Thursday, the monorail's final voyage was an evening trip from the West Garden station to the East Garden station. All the onboard passengers were chosen by lottery. In a speech before the departure, stationmaster Kazuhide Nagata, 64, stated, "I remember vividly many children saying that the monorail ride was fun."
