自衛隊の中東派遣評価＝台湾総統選への中国の介入懸念－米軍高官

　米軍高官は２１日、東京都内で記者団と懇談し、日本政府が自衛隊の中東派遣の検討に着手したことについて「トランプ（米）大統領の当初の要請と同じではないかもしれないが、前向きで正しい方向への一歩だ」と評価した。
　高官は、中東の緊張緩和への貢献はどのようなものであれ、取り組みのグローバルな性格を象徴することになると指摘。「日本の中東への関与は有益だ」と述べた。
　日本に対してはまた、「攻撃的兵器について論じるのが内政上難しいことは知っているが、議論する必要がある。現状維持はもはや許されない」と訴え、北朝鮮のミサイル能力の向上を踏まえ、発射前にミサイル基地を攻撃する「敵基地攻撃能力」の保有を検討するよう促した。
　中国の動向をめぐっては、来年の台湾総統選に影響を及ぼす目的で「何かするのではないかと懸念している」と挑発の可能性に言及。反政府抗議活動に揺れる香港情勢に触れ、「香港で起きている事態は台湾で目にするだろうことの前触れになるかもしれない」と語り、台湾市民が中国に反発し、混乱が生じる危険を示唆した。
　日韓の対立については、米国の同盟国同士の関係冷却化で最も利益を得るのは中国と北朝鮮、ロシアだと指摘し、「失望」を表明した。（2019/10/21-20:31）

A senior U.S. military official Monday gave a positive response to Japan's envisioned Self-Defense Forces dispatch to the Middle East as part of efforts to secure navigation safety.
   "It may not be what the United States or what President (Donald) Trump initially asked for, but it is a step forward in the right direction," the official told a meeting with reporters in Tokyo.
   The Japanese government decided to consider dispatching the SDF at a National Security Council meeting Friday. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Tokyo will not participate in a U.S-proposed maritime security initiative but will engage in its own independent activities.
   The official said that any contribution to mitigating tensions in the Middle East is more of a global response.
   "I do think it is beneficial that Japan has an involvement out there," the official said.
